From the archives: Bryn Forbes' contract to become guaranteed

Originally posted January 8, 2018

January 10, 2018.  A random hump-day for most of us but not for Bryn Forbes. This Wednesday, January 10th, is the date all non-guaranteed NBA contracted become guaranteed for the remainder of the season.

Rewind to October when the Spurs entered training camp with 15 players under contract. Despite an impressive Summer League (#SummnerofBryn), Forbes could not afford to rest on his laurels.  As the only player with a non-guaranteed contract (only $100,000 of $1,312,611 was guaranteed) he surely would have been the casualty had the Spurs decided to open up a rooster spot. Even as the season started there was no guarantee that Forbes would still be on the rooster at the end of the year, let alone receive significant playtime.

Fast forward back to today and all the hard work that Forbes has put into his game has has paid off. He has played in all 41 games at the midway point of the season and is averaging 7.2 ppg while shooting 38.8% from three. Forbes scored a season high 22 points to lead the Spurs to a win over Mavs early in November and hit the game winner against the Suns in December. Forbes has been compared to Steph Curry by Greg Popovich and referred to affectionately as the Walking Bucket by Rudy Gay. What has impressed me most about Forbes this season is his play on the defensive side of the ball.  While Forbes, who is listed at 6'3" Forbes is an undersized at the two guard spot, he hustles constantly on D and his defensive awareness is improving each game as he gets in more reps.

Forbes has certainly started to carve out a role for himself in the NBA and, at this point, I do think it is premature to say that his contract will soon become guaranteed.  Congrats Bryn, you have earned it!
