On Monday, Keldon Johnson from the Austin Spurs and Paul Watson from the Raptors 905 were named to the 2019-20 All-NBA G League Midseason Teams.
The teams are voted on by NBA G League coaches and general managers based on the first half of the season. Eligible players must have played in 50% of their team's games and be on an active roster.
The 29th pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, Johnson has spent most of the season with the Austin Spurs on assignment from San Antonio. In 29 games with Austin Johnson is averaging 20.1 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 30 minutes a game. Word out of Austin is that Johnson has been impressive, yet inconsistent in his play. In addition to having the game slow down for him, three point shooting (currently 22.4%) and day-to-day impact (+6.5 in Austin wins and -10 in losses) are two specific areas where it would be nice to see improvement in the second half of the season. Time will tell if he turns out to be, in the words of Becky Hammon, the "steal of the draft".
North of the border, Watson has been a constant for the 905, who have seen more their fair share of roster turnover this season. In 22 games, Watson is averaging 17.9 points, 7 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 34.1 minutes a game. After a strong start to the season, the Raptors signed the undrafted Watson to a two-way contract on January 15th. Perhaps the most impressive part of Watson's game this season has been the uptick in his three point shooting, current at 42.9% on 6.9 attempts per game.
